Object description

Waclaw Rzewuski (1706–1779, Krzywda coat of arms) was the son of Stanislaw Mateusz Rzewuski and Ludwika Kunicka. His wife was Anna Lubomirska (c. 1717–1763), a daughter of Josef Lubomirski, voivode of Chernihiv. Waclaw Rzewuski was a Grand Crown Hetman, statesman and politician of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the owner of the Pidhirtsi Castle. The image follows the traditions typical of ceremonial and representative works of the 18th century, which are characterised by monumentality. Waclaw Rzewuski is depicted against the background of a massive column and crimson drapery, in knightly armour, with a blue ribbon and the Order of the White Eagle. A provincial artist created the small-sized canvas following the model of a ceremonial portrait of Waclaw Rzewuski (1730–1735; 230,5 x 174 cm; Lviv Historical Museum), which is attributed to Yurii Radyvylovskyi who worked in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Lviv, and Dubno.
