Biography: Aleksei Morgunov (1884–1935) was a Russian artist. He started out as a neo-premitivist with strong Fauvism influences, and produced weighty works in Cubo-Futurism. In the 1910s, he travelled around Germany, France and Italy. Impressionists such as Pierre Puvis de Chavan, Edouard Manet, Gustave Courbet, Paul Cézanne had a strong influence on his art. He was a member of the Jack of Diamonds. In 1914–1915 – a close associate of Malevich. He founded the "Februaryism" direction. During this period, there are features of Suprematism in his art. In the 1920s, the artist turns to neoclassicism, and in the last years of his life to social realism. This work is painted in Paris.

Object description

A stylised landscape. It depicts a forest with people walking through it. The figures and nature are represented rather conventionally and flat, without detailing the characters. Tall trees with yellow, green and blue leaves and flat trunks are depicted on the brownish-ochre ground covered in clear sunlight spots. The trees form an alley running diagonally from left to right. On the right, a small boy in a yellow jacket and black trousers is running after a large, dark blue ball. Behind them are two women dressed in white, blue and lilac, one holding a brown basket in her hand. On a bench to the left sit two men in blue and ochre coats; a woman in a wide blue dress sits behind them. In the back, green hillocks can be seen through the trees. Above is a white-grey strip of sky.
