Biography: Iványi Grünwald Béla (1860–1940) was a Hungarian artist, teacher, member and leader of the artists' colony in Nagybánya (Baia Mare) and founder of the colony in Kecskemét. His main subject is village life. He studied in Budapest, Munich, then at the Académie Julian in Paris. His art is marked by different phenomena of modernism, first French naturalism, later he was attracted by plein air painting and costumed scenes. He adopted a free style of brushstroke, a bright palette and abandonment of the strict rules of perspective from the Fauvists (under the influence of young artists returning from Paris and an exhibition of French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists held in Budapest in 1907).

Object description

From the front edge, a dirt country road turns inland to the left, with houses on either side of the road. To the right of the fence is a red-roofed house with two trees and green bushes. Behind the house by the road is an ochre-coloured haystack. Four houses can be seen to the left of the road. In the foreground is a thatched-roofed house. Nearby are several brownish-ochre haystacks, behind two more houses with red roofs, and several trees between them. Above the village are clouds of white-blue and white-grey clouds, above which a strip of blue sky can be seen. The style of painting is pastose, post-impressionistic, the artist works with broad strokes of paint.
