Biography: Polish artist, one of the representatives of colourism (Kapists), co-founder of the Paris Committee. First female professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. Wife of Jan Cybis, painter. In the academic year 1917–1918, she began her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, in the studio of Miłosz Kotarbiński. However, three years later, she had to temporarily discontinue her studies due to financial problems. Soon, however, her relative Feliks Hilchen, director of the port in Gdańsk, came to help her. Thanks to him, Rudzka-Cybis was able to return to art studies, which she began in 1921 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, under the supervision of Ignacy Pienkowski and Stanislaw Dębicki. From 1923 the artist studied at the studio of Jozef Pankiewicz. During her years in Paris, she developed her own personal artistic style, manifesting itself in lyrical and lightly painted pictures. One of the founders of the Paris Committee. From 1937 to 1939 the artist also organised summer courses for teachers at the Krzemieniec Lyceum. In the autumn of 1937, she travelled to Italy. That same year, she visited the World's Fair in Paris. In 1938, she attended an exhibition of Polish art at the Carnegie Institute (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh. The first woman to hold the position of professor, she first became an assistant professor in 1945 and was promoted to professor in 1956. In the following years, she was first Deputy Dean (1959–1960) and then Dean (1960–1962) of the Department of Painting.

Object description

The painting "Bridge over the Seine" shows a river flowing between two banks. In the foreground, in the lower-left corner, one can see the roof of a building. On the right, on a steep bank, there is a pier with a metal bridge and boats can be seen at the back. Trees are shown along the bank, followed by buildings. Then there is a suspension bridge on metal arches, with a boat and people sailing underneath. At the back, in high relief, the buildings of the town can be seen. The painting is done in a post-impressionist manner, with small strokes and close to Pointillism. The artist not only reproduces the natural phenomena – fog over the river in grey-blue tones, dusky light, underlined by bluish-blue-pink blotches – but also the melancholy of the city itself and its atmosphere.
