Object description
The painting, which can currently be attributed to an unknown 18th-century Venetian artist, was strongly influenced by Antonio Balestra's style. It represents the dead Saint Sebastian, pierced by arrows. Irene and her maid, healing his wounds, are depicted on the right. The plot was inspired by Antonio Balestra's work "Irene Healing Saint Sebastian". It is possible that a later engraving from Balestra's work, attributed to Pietro Rotari, could have served as a source for the interpretation of the plot.
