Biography: Cornelius Hojer was a famous Danish and French miniaturist. At first, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, later he studied under the supervision of J. B. Masse in Paris. He worked in Paris, Rome, Dresden (1767–1768), Berlin, St. Petersburg (1781–1782), Stockholm, Weimar (1788), and Copenhagen.

Object description

The miniature represents a waist-length image of a man in metal armor, over which there is a blue ribbon and a blue camisole lined with red fabric. There is the star of the Order of the White Eagle on the camisole. A tricorn military hat trimmed with white feathers, and a red drapery or cloak with ermine fur at the bottom, which is hanging to the right, indicate the high rank of the person portrayed. Maurice, Count of Saxony (illegitimate son of Augustus II the Strong) was awarded with the Order of the White Eagle in 1719. In 1746, he became Marshal General of France.
