Biography: Jean-Pierre Norblin was an outstanding French graphic artist and painter who brought the French Rococo style to the art of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was born in 1740 in Misy-sur-Yonne. Rembrandt and Antoine Watteau strongly influenced his artistic style. Jean-Pierre Norblin studied in Paris under several famous masters, including the Italian Francesco Casanova, Louis-Michel van Loo, and Joseph-Marie Vien. In 1772, Prince Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski invited the artist to work at his residence in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Later, in 1790, Jean-Pierre Norblin moved to Warsaw and established his private school, where a new generation of Polish artists was educated. The master spent 14 years in the capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth before returning to Paris.

Object description

In this work, Jean-Pierre Norblin depicted a landscape with a "gallant" scene in an almost sketchy manner. A crowd of aristocrats having fun and relaxing is presented in the foreground. The artist schematically outlined the general contours of the figures so that the viewer could obtain a sense of the overall composition. The figures become more visually specific in some places of the work. For example, a man in a yellow jacket and red cape, a lady in a puffy dress, and three women having fun. The outline of a building can be seen in the background on the left.
