Object description

Joachim Potocki (1700–1764) was an elder of Lviv, ambassador of the Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, military leader, colonel of the Crown Artillery, major general of the Crown troops, and collector. He was a son of Stefan Potocki, Crown Referendary and an elder of Lviv, and Konstancja Denhoff. Joachim Potocki was married to Ewa Kaniewska. He inherited the ownership of Chortkiv from his father and gathered a great collection of family portraits in the Chortkiv Castle. The expressive bust-length image of Joachim Potocki is painted on a dark background. It was executed by a provincial artist in a planar manner. Using clear lines, the artist painted thick eyebrows, a snub nose, small eyes, plump lips with a faint smile, and a clear shape of the face framed by a fashionable silver wig. A bright accent is a red cape.
