Biography: Giovanni Domenico Valentino (Rome, c. 1630 – Imola, c. 1708) was an Italian late Baroque artist who specialised in combining genre painting and still life. The artist spent most of his life living and working in Rome, except for 1680–1681, when he worked in Imola and Ravenna. He drew inspiration from Flemish painters of the Eternal City. The use of Scandinavian models in developing the fine art genre with interior scenes and still life elements gained great popularity among commissioners, which led to almost mass production of "interior paintings", always executed with charm.

Object description

This artwork depicting a captivating kitchen interior is a typical composition by the Roman artist Gian Domenico Valentino, also known as Giovanni Domenico Valentino. The painting "Kitchen Interior" was received as a work by a Dutch artist of the 17th century. The Gallery's researcher Halyna Derhachova determined the authorship based on a comparative analysis with known works of Valentino. Giovanni Domenico Valentino stood out in the artistic panorama of 17th-century Italy because of his favourite subjects: mostly kitchen interiors, where countless objects are piled up in picturesque chaos: dishes, vases, watering cans, jugs, bottles, flasks, glasses, cauldrons, basins and other copperware, which is why he was nicknamed the "painter of kitchens". Everything depicted is arranged according to the dictates of a carefully organised still life. The artist seems to strive to ennoble everyday life and make it an emblem of art.
