Biography: Vincenzo Foppa (c. 1430–1515) was an Italian artist and founder of the Lombard School of Painting. Among his most significant works are the frescoes in the Portinari Chapel in the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio in Milan. Prior to the arrival of Leonardo da Vinci, Vincenzo Foppa was considered the leading artist in Lombardy. He worked mainly in Milan, whose rulers favoured works in the style of the old Gothic tradition. According to Vasari, he studied in Padua alongside Mantegna. His works combined elements of the late Gothic style with humanistic culture influences. In the fresco cycles of the Portinari Chapel, Foppa introduced a landscape background and displayed his knowledge of perspective. Those works marked the pinnacle of Lombard Renaissance art during that period. Abandoning decorativeness, Foppa embraced dramatic and truthful depictions, which later became characteristic of Lombard paintings.

Object description

The work was probably created by the Italian artist Vincenzo Foppa. In the painting, there is a combination of Gothic and Renaissance elements. A pronounced rhythmicity in the distribution of shapes and colour accents harmonises the composition. In the centre of the gilded background, the artist depicts Madonna holding the infant Jesus. To her right is St. Dominic in Dominican garments (white habit and black cloak). He is holding a lily, his attribute, a symbol of purity. To the left of Madonna is St. Peter the Martyr, a Catholic monk, Dominican preacher, and Inquisitor of Lombardy. He was tonsured a monk by St. Dominic. In 1252, Peter was killed in the forest near Barlassina on his way to Milan.
