Biography: Jan Jansz van de Velde was a painter who worked in the traditions of still life painting established by Pieter Claesz and Willem Heda. The artist was born in Haarlem and studied under his father, Jan van de Velde. In the 1640s, he worked in Amsterdam. Although the artist spent considerable time living and working in Delft, he travelled all over Europe, getting involved in new techniques and ideas. His painting style revolved around creating rich, detailed, and exquisite still lifes featuring glassware, fruits, and flowers. Van de Velde later became one of the leading masters of still life painting. His works are known for their realistic Renaissance style and the abundance of unusual objects, where he skillfully contrasted different materials and textures.

Object description

Jan Jansz van de Velde was a Dutch artist who specialised in still life painting. In great detail, the artist depicted grapes, three lemons, and a half-full glass. The authentically painted branch of grapes demonstrates the young artist's proficiency at the time. The light combined with the grey-yellowish colours gives the composition simplicity and elegance. Dutch still life painting of the seventeenth century was intended as decorative artwork for homes and a display of exotic objects that were available in a prosperous country.

At the bottom on the edge of the table, there is a signature and date: "J. v Velde / 1639"
