Object description

Anna Sieniawska (1604–1632) was the daughter of Aleksander Chodkiewicz, voivode of Trakai, and Katarzyna Korniaktowna. She was the wife of Prokop Sieniawski, who was a standard-bearer. She died at a young age. The figure of Anna Sieniawska emerges from the dark, dull background in a frozen canonical pose at the table with a book and a crucifix, emphasising the devoutness and modesty of the portrayed woman. The provincial artist has depicted the lovely face of the young woman with a tired look using graphic and delicate lines. The painting is dominated by a deep black colour with inclusions of white, which surrounds the face. A flat manner of execution characterises the portrait. On the upper right side of the work, there is the Kosciesza coat of arms with an inscription above: "ANNA Evphrozyna Zbychowa Chotkiewiczuw / Hrabianka na Sklowie / YMYSZY YGOLOGVRA / Sieniawska Chorazyna KORONNA /».
