Object description
The sculptural composition of the Ascension of Christ, following the Western tradition, depicts the saint with his left foot resting on the skull of Adam. This image symbolises the victory of life over death. The master, conveying the dynamics of movement, relied on professional examples in his work: this is emphasised by the outstretched left leg, which imitates a walk. The position of the body, the curved S-shaped silhouette (figura serpentinata), which dominated Baroque plastics, and the energetic folds of the scarlet cloak falling from the shoulders enhance the emotionality of the sculpture. The figure of Christ is distinguished by its expressive contour, dynamic form, and carefully crafted details.
