Object description
The full-bodied image of the saint is restrained in movement. He is dressed in a long dark tunic and a chasuble, the outer liturgical vestment of the Roman Catholic Church. The man's chasuble is cut and with smooth gold embroidery. Such "cut vestments" appeared in the Baroque period. The saint's vestments are modelled with straight vertical strands that fall freely downwards. The pattern of the garment's drapery is somewhat restrained and arranged without excessive folds and intersecting lines. The emotional tension is evident in the expression of the elongated face, framed by curls of wavy hair and a short beard, worked out with flat, ritualistic lines. Full of melancholic thoughts, the saint is depicted with barely drawn, low-set eyebrows, a high, smooth forehead, small eyes, and a slightly open mouth. The saint's confident gaze and emotional reserve create the image of a purposeful and self-confident person.
