Object description
In Christianity, the lamb is one of the allegorical representations of Christ, an animal that was often sacrificed. For believers, especially Catholics, the image of the lamb was a symbol of Christianity. It symbolised purity, innocence, gentleness, and goodness. The sacrificial lamb was the prototype of the lamb who would take away the sins of all mankind and give them new life. In this work, the lamb is a fragment of the compositional decoration of the altar. Its front part emerges from a fanciful baroque pattern. With naturalistic authenticity, the master reproduced the animal's characteristic features, trying to convey the texture of sheep's wool, carefully carving each curl.
