Object description

Jan Mikolaj Chodkiewicz (1738–1781) – military and statesman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Adjutant General of the King. He was the son of Adam Tadeusz Chodkiewicz, voivode of Brest-Lithuania, and Ewa of the Czapski family. He was Commander of the Orders of Stanislaus (1764) and the White Eagle (1774). From 1768 the portrait was kept in the Pidhirtsi castle without the name of the portrayed person. Since 1812 the inventory states that the portrait represents Chodkiewicz. The half-length image shows a man in a haughty pose, wearing a uniform with a red ribbon of the Order of St Stanislaus, and a fancy silver wig with curls. A high forehead, big eyes with a piercing gaze, a clear, protruding chin, slightly arched eyebrows suggest an experienced, strong-willed personality.
