Object description

Sophia Charlotte of Hanover (1668–1705) – Duchess of Brunswick and Lüneburg. Daughter of Sophia of Hanover and the Elector of Hanover, Ernst Augustus of Brunswick-Lüneburg. In 1701, Sophia Charlotte became the first Queen of Prussia. She was educated and spoke Italian, French, and English. The nominal oval depicts a young woman in a décolleté dress with a red cloak lined with fur on a neutral dark background. Her proud posture, determined gaze, and aristocratic features framed by dark hair indicate a confident and purposeful personality. The painting of Sophia Charlotte is a copy of a portrait by the German artist Friedrich Wilhelm Weidemann or Wiedemann (1668–1750), who was court painter to Frederick Wilhelm, King of Prussia.
