Object description
In the centre, offset to the left on a wooden stool, stands a man dressed in a dress-shatter covering his entire body from head to toe. On his head, the man is holding a wooden theatre house. Among the curtains on the wall of the house is a picture of a doll in a red suit. In front of the theatre, a man is depicted with a folded fan in his hands. The man is dressed in a long blue robe and a short jacket; on his head is a kippah with a feather. The etching comes from the album "Customs and National Costumes of the Chinese", which includes 60 images of Chinese people engaged in various activities. An explanation in German accompanies each image; some are written in French. In the 18th century, artists in Canton (Guangzhou) in southern China created these paintings for Europeans eager to learn more about China and its people.
Inscriptions
In the lower left corner is a calligraphic inscription in Indian ink, "Pu-Qua. Canton. Delin.". In the lower right corner is an inscription, "Dadley. London. Sculpt". In the upper right corner is the number "19".
