Object description
In the 17th and 18th centuries, bourgeois portraiture was widespread in the western part of Ukraine. Gradually, it lost some attributes that were common for noblemen portraits. It became less important for customers to show their social status. More essential was to immortalise the image of a respectable person for their relatives or community. The portrait shows a bust-length image of a woman in a bourgeois dress with a large white collar, a white bonnet with black lace, and jewellery around her neck. The artist does not conceal the older woman's features, particularly her wrinkled face, sunken eyes, sharp nose, and thin and slightly crooked lips. Using a restrained colour scheme, the artist conveyed the image of a tired woman of a venerable age.
