Object description
The theme of Christ's Passion is quite common in art. Flagellation was one of the forms of torment inflicted upon Jesus during Pontius Pilate's judgment. Jesus was often depicted near a column with his hands tied behind his back. The sculpture from the Lanivtsi village shows a frontal full-length figure of Christ with his hands behind his back, tied with a thick rope. The sculptor anatomically skilfully recreated the body of Jesus, accurately depicting the chest, ribs, and muscular legs. The hair is modelled in parallel wavy, shallow carved lines. The sturdy Saviour's figure is covered by a loincloth on the thighs, worked out with diagonal lines of folds with pointed ribbed protrusions. The texture of the rope with a large knot on the back is meticulously portrayed. It is difficult to imagine the original image of Christ due to the significant losses of the face and two feet.
