Biography: Zygmunt Rozwadowski (25 January 1870, Lviv, Austro-Hungarian Empire – 23 July 1950, Zakopane, Poland) was a Polish artist known for his battle scenes from the Napoleonic Wars, portraits, and landscapes; he was also a scenographer, educator, and co-author of the "Raclawice Panorama". He studied at the Krakow School of Fine Arts from 1883 to 1889, where one of his teachers was Jan Matejko. From 1891 to 1893, the artist continued his education in Munich at the private school of Anton Azbe. After completing his studies, he returned to Lviv, where he worked as an artist and instructor at the State Industrial School. In 1899, Rozwadowski founded the Union of Polish Artists in Lviv and served as its president from 1903. The artist was also a member of the Lviv Society of Friends of Fine Arts, where he served as vice-president from 1913 to 1914. He worked as a theatre decorator. During World War I, Zygmunt Rozwadowski participated in military actions as a member of the Polish Army. After World War II, he settled in Zakopane, where he spent the last years of his life and died on 23 July 1950.

Object description

Against the backdrop of an autumn forest, a profile view of a rider on a bay horse. The rider moves to the right along a wide, straight path flanked by green grass scattered with fallen leaves. The man is dressed in a greenish-grey riding suit, high brown boots, and a light-coloured hat with a black ribbon. In his right hand, he holds a whip. Equestrian portraits are prominent in the work of Zygmunt Rozwadowski, so it is no surprise that the artist chose this composition for his self-portrait. The work is executed in muted green and brown tones, using Impressionist techniques and methods to depict the landscape background.
