Biography: Stanislaw Bartus (1821–1859) was a Polish painter, lithographer, and miniaturist. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at Lviv University. From 1841 to 1845, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The artist lived and worked in Lviv. Stanislaw Bartus primarily painted portraits and miniatures and also gave drawing lessons. In 1853, he married Henryka Szczepanska. His daughter, Maria Bartus (1854–1885), was a renowned Polish poet and writer. The artist died of tuberculosis at the age of 38. The paintings by Stanislaw Bartus are held in museums in Krakow and Lviv, as well as private collections.

Object description

Against a backdrop of cloudy skies is a half-length depiction of a middle-aged woman in a gentle half-profile to the right. She is dressed in a blue silk gown, white lace ruffled collar, and white cuffs. The attire is completed with a black cape adorned with an ornamental border. Her hands are crossed at waist level. Her dark hair is styled in a strict updo with a centre parting. The woman's facial features are soft, with a gentle blush on her cheeks. The woman has expressive blue eyes that gaze calmly at the viewer. Behind the portrait subject, a portion of a hilly landscape and a green tree are visible. To the right is a tall column with the artist's signature inscribed on its pedestal.
