Biography: Jan Kanty Ignacy Maszkowski (16 October 1794, village of Khorostkiv, now Ternopil Oblast – 20 October 1865, village of Borshchovychi, now Lviv Oblast) was a Polish and Ukrainian portrait painter. He was a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He painted portraits, historical paintings, and genre scenes. He directed a painting school in Lviv, where students included Juliusz Kossak, Artur Grottger, and Henryk Rodakowski. He was the father of the artist Marceli Maszkowski (1837–1862).

Object description

The bust-length portrait of Jozef Ossolinski from 1832 is a sketch for a full-length portrait painted by the artist in 1843 (Ж-7978). Jozef Kajetan Piotr Maksymilian Ossolinski (1748–1826) was the son of Michal, Castellan of Czchow, and Anna Szaniewska. A bibliophile, historian, literary scholar, writer, translator, and founder of a library. He was one of the Galician delegates to the Viennese court in 1790. He was a Privy State Councillor and Prefect of the Imperial Court Library (1808–1809). He also served as Grand Crown Marshal and Great Chamberlain of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria (1817–1825). He was a member of many European scholarly societies. In 1823, together with Henryk Lubomirski, he founded the Ossolinski National Institute in Lviv. From 1785, he was the husband of Teresa Jablonowska, daughter of the Castellan of Wislica. In 1824, he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Saint Stephen.
