Biography: Marceli Maszkowski (1837, Lviv – 1862, Lviv) was a Polish and Ukrainian portrait painter, lithographer, and sculptor. He was the son of the artist Jan Maszkowski. He studied painting under his father, Jan Maszkowski, and then continued his education at the academies in Vienna and Munich. For a time, he lived and worked in Leipzig and Dresden, where he created magazine illustrations. He primarily painted portraits of prominent figures in the Lviv community.

Object description

Against a neutral dark-brown background, a knee-length portrait of an older woman is depicted in a slight profile to the left, gazing at the viewer. Her right hand rests on her waist while her left hand is lowered. The portrayed woman is dressed in an elegant, dark olive lightweight cloak with wide sleeves. Beneath the cloak, a white lace collar of the dress is visible, adorned with a lavender bow and white lace cuffs. The grey hair is neatly styled in an updo with a centre part and boucles. A light black gauze veil covers the head.

The name of the person portrayed: Jozefa Maszkowska, nee Simat (or Simon?), was the wife of the artist Jan Maszkowski (1794–1865) from 1820 and the mother of Marceli.
