Object description
Konrad Krzyzanowski, born in Ukraine, is considered one of the most prominent figures of the Warsaw art circle. His most outstanding works were portraits. Working under the influence of modernism, the artist created portraits of a symbolic-expressive nature, employing a rich colour palette and exquisite technique. In his compositions, the piano or grand piano often resonates. While in the artist's early paintings, the musical instrument played a dominant role, in the 1914 canvas, it is a secondary object. Almost half of the composition is occupied by two women sitting at the piano. One of them – the one closer to the viewer – is in a white dress, playing the keys with inspiration. The other woman listens dreamily to the music. The man depicted to their left, dressed in a black tailcoat and sitting in a red armchair, listens intently to the chords. The colour-balanced and well-planned composition is executed with lively and bold brushstrokes.
