Biography: Leon Jan Wyczolkowski (April 11, 1852, Huta Miastkowska, Masovian Voivodeship, Poland – December 27, 1936, Warsaw, Poland) was a prominent Polish painter, engraver, and educator who was a notable representative of the "Young Poland" movement in realism and Impressionism.

Object description

After his first artistic journey to Ukraine, Leon Wyczolkowski, captivated by the Ukrainian colours and customs, began to lean towards Impressionism. The works from this period are filled with light and vibrant colours. The artist returned to Ukraine several times and created a series of paintings featuring themes of peasant labour. This series also includes the sketch "Oxen by the Trough". The work is a plein air composition in which, almost diagonally, silhouettes of oxen are painted on both sides of the trough, with their even rows mirroring the horizon line. Broad brushstrokes in the foreground convey a diverse range of purple, blue, and brown hues, reflecting the field and sky.
