Biography: The canvas is most likely a copy of a work by Scipione Pulzone (Il Gaetano). Scipione Pulzone (c. 1544, Gaeta, Italy – 1 February 1598, Rome, Papal States) was an Italian Renaissance painter whose early works symbolised the international style of the 16th century. Although little is known about Pulzone's personal life, it is believed that he was a student of Jacopino del Conte. In his painting "The Assumption of Mary" (1585, Rome), Pulzone reflects pre-Renaissance Venetian and Sienese traditions' influences in his religious imagery. The artist painted many members of the Roman aristocracy and clergy. Characteristic of his work are the "Portrait of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese" (National Gallery, Rome) and the "Portrait of a Knight" (National Gallery of Antique Art, Rome).

Object description

The painting is a copy of the work by Scipione Pulzone, "Grand Duke Ferdinando I (1549–1609), Cardinal of Tuscany", a half-length portrait from the late 16th century. The original painting is held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum collection in Vienna. The Medici were a noble family whose members repeatedly became rulers of Florence from the 15th to the 18th century. Among the members of the Medici family are four popes, Leo X, Pius IV, Clement VII and Leo XI, as well as several members of the French royal family. Ferdinando (Fernando) I de' Medici (30 July 1549 – 7 February 1609) was the Grand Duke of Tuscany (1587–1609), who significantly increased the prestige and influence of the Medici family both in Italy and beyond. Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery also holds another painting depicting Ferdinando I de' Medici, "Coral Fishers" by Jacopo Zucchi.
