Object description
The painting reproduces a canonical scene of sacred art – the Holy Family. It depicts the Virgin Mary, the infant Jesus, and Saint Joseph the Betrothed.
In the foreground, the Mother of God bends over her Son. Her face is filled with tenderness and maternal care. The Virgin Mary is traditionally attired in a red dress and a blue maphorion – a long veil covering the head and shoulders. The Christ Child lies on white swaddling clothes, his gaze directed at his Mother.
To the left, behind the Virgin's back, sits Saint Joseph. He rests his head upon his right hand – a classical iconographic pose of contemplation and reverence before the mystery of the Saviour's birth. Visible above Joseph's head is his attribute – a staff with almond blossoms, symbolising righteousness and divine election.
