Object description
The painting is a fine example of a child's portrait from the Romantic period (late 18th – first half of the 19th century). The canvas depicts a young girl set against a landscape background. She wears a brown, high-waisted, Empire-style dress, cinched with a thin grey-blue sash tied in a bow.
The girl is captured in swift motion to the left, with her face turned towards the viewer. Her round face is framed by lush, curly chestnut locks that cascade freely, creating a sense of being stirred by the wind. Her expression is calm, serious, and somewhat pensive.
Most of the canvas is occupied by a sky heavy with overcast clouds, through which rays of sunlight break here and there. Silhouettes of mountains are visible on the horizon.
