Object description
The painting by an unknown author iconographically and stylistically follows the traditions of the Italian Renaissance of the late 15th – early 16th century. The composition is enclosed within a tondo format.
The artwork reproduces a canonical scene of religious fine art – the Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist. The figures are set against a sweeping panoramic landscape.
The Virgin Mary is depicted from the knees up, in a gentle three-quarter view to the left. Her face is elegant, and her gaze is filled with maternal love and sadness. The Mother of God is dressed according to the fashion of the period: she wears a rich dark red gown, girdled below the breast with a golden ribbon, and a dark blue maphorion with gold embroidery along the edges. A fine transparent veil covers her head, cascading over her shoulders.
The Infant Jesus stands on his Mother's knees, tenderly embracing her neck with his left hand.
To the right of the Madonna stands the young John the Baptist. His hands are clasped in a prayerful gesture of reverence. He is clad in a dark hairshirt, accompanied by his indispensable attribute – a slender reed cross.
The heads of all three figures are crowned with large golden haloes.
