Object description
This intimate tondo painting depicts Saint Francis at prayer. The work is built on a stark contrast of light and shadow, with the light source dramatically emerging the hermit's lean, ascetic face from the utter darkness. The emotional core of the canvas lies in Francis's upward-turned eyes. Around his neck, the contours of a hood from the traditional brown Franciscan habit are softly visible.
