Object description
The painting is an example of the sacred iconographic type known as Christ the Saviour Bust-Length (Spas Oplechnyi). The work by an unknown author stylistically follows the traditions of the Late Baroque or Classicism of the 17th – 18th century. The palette of the canvas is restrained and almost monochrome.
Christ is depicted en face against a neutral dark background. The image is bust-length: the Saviour appears with traditional long, dark brown wavy hair, a beard, and a moustache. Jesus's gaze, directed at the viewer, is filled with wisdom and mercy. Around His head, instead of a distinct graphic halo, a soft cruciform radiance is rendered. The Messiah is dressed in a traditional brownish-red chiton and a himation cloak.
