Seaside Bay

The painting by an unknown artist is a panoramic seascape with elements of staffage. In its composition and colouring, the work demonstrates distinct features of the 17th-century Italo-Flemish school of painting. The canvas is built on a sharp tonal contrast, with most of it immersed in deep black, olive, and dark brown tones. The characteristic drawing of the figures and the specific rendering of the coastal landscape suggest that the author belonged to the circle or workshop of the artist Giovanni Grevenbroeck, known as Solfarolo (1650–1699), who lived and worked in Italy.
Harbour scenes were immensely popular in the art of this period. The foreground depicts a brightly lit section of the quay, next to which the massive hulls of wooden boats, masts, and rigging are visible. The landscape is enlivened by the figures of fishermen, peasants, and townspeople working by the water, conversing, or walking along.
Beyond the dark stretch of water rise rocky shores. Architectural structures of a coastal town are scattered across the hillsides. On the horizon, against a heavy sky, the silhouettes of mountain peaks can be seen.
