Object description
The work by an unknown artist is a classic example of the marine battle genre. In its composition and colouring, the painting demonstrates distinct features of the 17th-century Italo-Flemish school of painting. A deep, almost monochrome dark brown and olive-black palette prevails, against which red and white flashes stand out in contrast.
The scene unfolds amidst a stormy sea at twilight or at night. It depicts a fierce naval battle involving a large number of sailing ships – galleons or frigates.
Such battle scenes were immensely popular in the decoration of private cabinets and palace galleries of the time.
