Object description
This intimate, bust-length portrait of a man is executed in the style of 17th-century Dutch or Flemish painting. Set against a neutral dark background, it depicts a mature subject with a thin moustache and a small goatee. His attire – a wide-brimmed hat and a turned-down white lace collar – indicates his belonging to the wealthy class.
The sitter is shown in a three-quarter view to the right, with his gaze directed straight at the viewer. Soft light illuminates only the right side of his face, whilst the left remains in semi-darkness.
