Object description
The painting by an unknown artist is an example of intimate female portraiture of a religious character. Stylistically, the canvas echoes the traditions of 16th-century Italian painting. The soft lighting, delicate modelling of the face, and refined rendering of emotions are characteristic of the followers of Correggio's manner.
Saint Margaret is depicted against a neutral black background with downcast eyes and a subtle smile, conveying a sense of humility, piety, and inner peace. Her head is slightly tilted to the left, and her hair is tucked under a dark headscarf. She is dressed in a red gown, partially covered by a dark blue mantle. The young woman's arms are crossed over her chest – a traditional gesture of submission, faith, and acceptance of the divine will. This prayerful posture of the hands, together with the facial expression, is characteristic of subjects where the saint is in prayer before martyrdom or at the moment of a miracle.
