A classic idyllic landscape with genre scenes by the water.
In its stylistic execution and restrained palette – dominated by brown, olive, deep green, and grey-ochre tones – the canvas aligns with 18th-century European landscape painting in the tradition of Claude Lorrain.
The unknown artist constructs the space using the principle of a coulisse composition: the foreground is framed by tall, slender trees whose crowns reach towards a sky rendered in warm, golden-yellow tones. A distinct spatial perspective is created by a tranquil river, which recedes towards the horizon in gentle curves.
The painting is populated with elements of staffage – small human figures that enliven the landscape. In the foreground, near the shore, two boats are depicted with fishermen plying their nets. Further downstream, another boat and several silhouettes on the riverbank are visible.
