Object description
The painting by an unknown 18th-century artist renders the iconographic theme of the Virgin Mary with the Child and Saint Anne.
Against the background of a heavy, vibrant red curtain – which underscores the exceptional and sacred nature of the event – three figures are depicted: the Mother of God, the Infant Jesus, and Saint Anne.
The Virgin Mary (on the left) is traditionally dressed in a pink gown and a dark blue maphorion, the folds of which fill the lower-left section of the work. The Madonna looks at the viewer with a subtle, gentle smile, creating a sense of shared presence. With her right hand, she tenderly supports the little Jesus, who sits in the arms of Saint Anne. Anne (on the right) is depicted as an elderly woman dressed in a blue gown and an ochre veil. She carefully cradles the Child with both hands as he nestles against her. The intimacy and lyrical nature of the images transform this classic religious subject into a quiet family scene.
