Object description
A pastoral landscape depicting livestock against the backdrop of an evening scenery. In terms of stylistic features and colour palette, the work draws on the European Baroque painting tradition of the 17th–18th centuries. The painting is executed in a rich dark, almost monochrome range with deep shadows.
The lower part of the composition presents domestic animals grazing: oxen, sheep, goats, and a shepherd's dog on the left. On the right, in the semi-darkness, the silhouette of a man in a wide-brimmed hat can be discerned. Since the line of a carrying pole is visible across his shoulders, this is likely the figure of a water-carrier on his way to water the livestock before nightfall.
The upper right part of the canvas is occupied by a tree-covered hill. Against the backdrop of a cloudy evening sky, ancient stone buildings rise.
