Object description
An appeal to ancient values and meanings, aesthetic ideals, images, and form-making is a feature of the Renaissance, Classicism, Baroque, and the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries culture. An example of the actualisation of the ancient theme is the image of Antinous, a young Greek man, lover and constant companion of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, after the tragic death of his adored lover. Characteristic features of the sculpture from the Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery collection are decorativeness, idealisation, laconic silhouette, and skilful, confident modelling of forms. The peculiarities of the plastic solution, material, scale and decor of the pedestal prove that the work is paired with the image of Venus (С-I-595) from the collection of Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery.
