Biography: Lucas Gassel (c. 1485–1569) was a Flemish landscape painter of the Renaissance. The artist perfected the depiction of the Flemish landscape. He is also known as an engraver, with his works published by the Antwerp publisher Hieronymus Cock. Little is known about the artist's life. It is believed that Gassel was born in Deurne, Netherlands. He later moved to Antwerp, where he stayed until 1520 and received his artistic education. Gassel is associated with the artistic community of Brussels, where he is believed to have moved later. The influences evident in the artist's work are more closely related to the Antwerp School of Painting.

Object description

Saint Jerome was a scholar and hermit of the 4th century who created the standard Latin translation of the Bible, known as the Vulgate. The saint is depicted kneeling in repentance in the desert, where he spent four years in solitude. As a reminder of death, a human skull lies at the foot of the crucifixion. Beside him is depicted a tame lion, from whose paw the saint has removed a thorn. The artist evokes particular admiration with his depictions of the landscape in the background.
