Rural School

In the 17th century, the Netherlands became the most important centre of European culture. Calvinism, the strictest branch of Protestantism, completely displaced the influence of the Catholic clergy on art. As religion prohibited murals and painted canvases in churches, artists increasingly focused on easel painting. The paintings that depict Dutch life reflect diligence, care, and a love for order and cleanliness. In addition, people were eager for knowledge because an educated person improves their life and changes their country. The spiritual atmosphere fostered the development of philosophy, mathematics, and the natural sciences. Freedom and education made the Netherlands one of the most powerful countries in Europe.
The "Rural School" painting, probably by Bartholomeus Molenaer, vividly depicts the educational process. In an old, dilapidated barn repurposed as a school, a gathering of peasants of various ages is depicted as they learn to read and write. The pupils sit on long benches while some hold their written pages on the floor. On the wall, there is a large white sheet with text. The heading "BOERE" (Dutch: farmer) indicates the lesson's theme. The section highlighted by bright light is associated with a ray of knowledge piercing through the darkness of ignorance. The light captures the indistinct faces of people, with figures in the background, emphasising the collective nature of the scene. However, it is known that education is impossible without punishment, so at the centre of the painting, the teacher harshly punishes a student for disobedience, inattention, or lack of effort.
