Object description
In the painting, against a dark background, a smiling man is depicted holding a glass in his right hand. In the 17th century, a distinctive circle of artists emerged in Madrid who turned to realistic painting. The genre of bodegon emerges. Typical of this genre are the dim lighting with a soft, warm light source, contrasting bright spots, detailed outlines of figures and textures, and an emphasis on naturalism. This theme was prevalent in Northern European countries, particularly in Spain. In the 17th century, the series of similar paintings based on the five senses theme became particularly popular. Their composition can allude to fully codified allegories, distinguishing between the code of animals and objects. In this work, the object is a glass of wine, an allegory of taste.
