Object description
The painting depicts a woman in a gentle turn, gazing at the viewer. She is portrayed in an elaborate dress typical of 18th-century fashion, adorned with flowers. With her right hand, she supports a Papillon dog – one of the oldest toy spaniel breeds. According to research by I. Khomyn, the portrait depicts Maria (Marianna) Jaroczewska, the daughter of Karol Wielopolski, the Grand Crown Standard-Bearer, and Elzbieta, originally from Mniszech. Marianna was likely born after 1725. In 1759, she became the wife of Tadeusz Jarochewski, the starost of Solec and a councillor of the Bar Confederation. On the reverse of the painting, there is an inscription indicating to whom the portrait belongs, along with the year the work was created – 1768, and the location – Poznan.
