Object description
Copies of ancient sculptures were particularly popular in the 19th century. According to ancient Greek mythology, Zeus is the chief deity of Olympus, the ruler of thunder and lightning. In ancient Roman mythology, he was identified with Jupiter. The supreme god of ancient Greek mythology knows the future, establishes laws, and defends justice. He also symbolises the driving force and the foundation of cosmic life. These ideas formed in late antiquity, bringing together the previously venerated local gods into a single image of Zeus. The most well-known depiction is that of Zeus Olympios.
