Object description
The painting depicts a young man in a hat, holding a basket in his right hand. The Spanish portrait reflects an interest in the individual, focusing on their inner world and the uniqueness of the portrayed subject. The work is executed without any idealisation of the subject. The realism in depicting the portrayed individual is rendered with almost photographic accuracy. It became customary to depict even the physical flaws of the individual. This is how realistic and documentary representations of people developed in Spain due to the harsh Spanish reality.
