Object description
The portrait features a waist-length depiction of a middle-aged man in dark clerical attire. His left arm is bent at the elbow, and a gathered white cuff is around his wrist. With his index and thumb, he holds a black biretta – a headwear of the Roman Catholic clergy, a square cap with a button on top. According to literary sources, the black colour of the biretta indicates a priest or deacon. However, the coat of arms depicted in the portrait suggests the subject's noble lineage and high ecclesiastical rank, at least at the level of a bishop. Above the coat of arms is the headwear "galero", adorned with 20 green tassels, symbolising the rank of an archbishop.
