Object description
The Grand Vizier was the first minister of the Sultan's court, the person first after the Padishah. He was subordinated to the Divan (Sultan's council) and the state chancellery. The newly appointed Vizier received a seal from the Sultan and had the right to issue orders on his behalf. The seal had to be carried on his belt at all times. The portrait depicts the Grand Vizier full-length, head turned three-quarters to the left, wearing a white üst kürk outer garment lined and framed with brown fur; on his head is a Cavalli, a headdress with a gold ribbon worn by all state officials. On his feet are boots made of yellow morocco leather.
