Biography
Guillaume Coustou the Younger (March 19, 1716 – July 13, 1777) was a French sculptor of the late French Baroque or Louis XIV style and early Classicism. Son of sculptor Guillaume Coustou the Elder. He was a scholarship holder at the French Academy in Rome from 1736 to 1740. In 1742, he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. He then had a successful official career, working freely in styles ranging from late Baroque to sentimental early Classicism. He created portrait busts, as well as works on religious and mythological themes.
Object description
The figure of a woman in ancient garments with regular classical features is depicted standing on a low podium. Her head is slightly turned to the right and down, her hair is gathered at the back of her head and adorned with a diadem. The woman leans on her right leg, her left knee slightly bent. The toga falls in wide folds down to the ground. The woman wears sandals on her feet. Both arms of the figure are missing. The work was created during the mature period of the sculptor's career, when he had a studio in Paris and worked there with his students.
Inscriptions
The base podium is engraved with: "Gme Coustou 1765 Paris".
