Object description

Jan Klemens Branicki (1689–1771) was Grand Deputy Cup–Bearer (pidczaszy) of the Crown, Field Crown Hetman, a voivode of Krakow, Great Crown Hetman, and a political figure of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was the only son of the voivode Stefan Mikolaj Branicki and Katarzyna Sapieha. The bust-length portrait of Jan Branicki follows the traditions of ceremonial portraiture of the 18th century, which is characterised by monumentality and a refined depiction of man. Along with the traditional techniques, the work has its significant features. Against a dark background is a bust-length image of a man wearing knight armour. He is depicted with a blue ribbon of the Order of the White Eagle. In his right hand, there is a mace. A vividly red cape stands out as a bright spot in the painting. The author mainly focused on the face of the person portrayed. The clothes, being painted in detail, do not distract attention from the portrait as a whole.
